And this at a time when Google’s Gmail, with its popularity, is inherently in a stronger position to attract more and more users to use their Drive storage service. Microsoft could very well be looking at taking advantage of the captive audience it has with the Windows platform-OneDrive is installed by default on new Windows laptops, hybrids and PCs, and regular pop-ups urge users to sign in and start using the cloud storage space.īut, it is important to note that mere suggestions to use a service may not always directly translate into new users. This change must be seen as a part of the evolving landscape which includes the Windows 10 operating system and the bunch of software services which tie in with it. Now, they are slashing it to 5GB, which is even lower than what they had offered nine years ago. They then increased this to 15GB, possibly in order to compete with Google Drive’s free storage plan. When OneDrive was launched in 2007 (it was known as SkyDrive then), Microsoft had offered 7GB of free storage. The wheels are finally in motion to apply this change.
